The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced it’s 2013 nominees earlier this week. Artists including Heart, Deep Purple, and Rush are all hopefuls for this year’s prestigious honor. In the past, voting has been exclusive to professionals in the industry to the dissatisfaction of many music fans. Both influential and popular artists have been snubbed for nominations and inductions. Donna Summer (a nomination for this year) has been nominated seven times without induction. Cat Stevens, who has been eligible for induction for twenty-one years, has only been nominated once.
To change this criticism, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has changed the voting process. For the first time, the organization is allowing fan voting. The voting will take place until December 3, when the five artists with the most votes will be considered as a “fan’s ballot” that will be counted for alongside the other voters. While this probably won’t solve the problems like artists not getting nominated for years, or less popular influential artists getting inducted like Kraftwerk (a 2013 nomination), I know as a fan of Rock and Roll that it is nice to finally have my opinion heard.
Above is a video summary released by the organization of all the 2013 Hall of Fame nominees.
