Throwback Thursday: “Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe”

For this week’s Throwback Thursday, we will be playing a few tracks off of the forthcoming Nick Lowe tribute album Lowe Country: The Songs of Nick Lowe.

Throughout Nick Lowe’s nearly half-century long career he’s pulled on many influences.  Part of what makes his music so special and versatile is the fact that it can’t really be placed into any one genre.  On Lowe Country, however, the contributing artists are tasked with doing just that;  if you couldn’t tell by the name, they’re all country artists.   Before you scoff, dismissively guffaw, or shriek and cover your eyes just know that, as with Lowe, calling the album “country” might be a bit reductive.  The lineup put together for this is a blend of up-and-coming artists and ones who are doing unique things with their own music.  The wide range of acts includes Jeff The Brotherhood, Hayes Carll, Lori McKenna, and Ron Sexsmith among many others.

Any good tribute album celebrates the artist on the front cover while providing unique and fresh takes of their songs by the artists on the back.  Lowe Country would definitely qualify, if not just for the concept of focusing on his more country side.  Although it might seem a strange choice at first, the best examples of Nick Lowe’s music and country music have a lot in common.  From witty lyrics to catchy melodies and superior songwriting, maybe Lowe’s music was made to get the country treatment.  Tune in at 5pm today to decide for yourself.
