New Releases Tuesday

Welcome to New Releases Tuesday on WERS. Every Tuesday we’ll take a look around the music scene and bring you updates on, you guessed it, the new albums coming out this week.

Divine Fits, A Thing Called Divine Fits – Spoon’s Britt Daniel and Wolf Parade’s Dan Boeckner are a supergroup made in indie heaven. They’re both known for writing spiky, unexpected songs that, after one or two listens, stay in your head for weeks. Their style is uneven from time to time, but no song seems to imitate the individuals’ main projects. Their collaboration is something like a really good cup of espresso: the buzz hits hard and stays with you, but there’s also layer after layer of flavor.

Bloc Party, Four – They took the indie world by storm with their 2005 debut Silent Alarm but after a serious sophomore album slump, Bloc Party are back and better than ever. They ditch the electronica of their last album in favor of barely-controlled art punk fury. This is an apocalyptic album, and a welcome return of the Bloc Party we knew and loved.

Yeasayer, Fragrant World – At first listen, Yeasayer seems like the kind of band that takes effort to love. The first impression is of sharp edges: very intricate synths, unexpected combinations of noises, and over everything, a voice so shrouded in special effects that it barely sounds human. They’re not trying to sound likeable. At the same time, Yeasayer is one of the catchiest pop bands around. Here, they skew a little toward the R&B side of melody, and it’s their smoothest album yet, but there are no real standout sing-alongs (see: O.N.E., Ambling Alp). Or maybe I just need to give it a couple more listens.
