Its been a interesting past two years for Hip-Hop group Odd Future. The collective consisting of by rapper/producer Tyler, The Creator, rappers Hodgy Beats, Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis, and Mike G, singer-songwriter/rapper Frank Ocean, producers Left Brain, Syd Tha Kyd, Matt Martians, Hal Williams and other non-musical members, went from basically unknown to controlling a national wide following. The group continues to pick up momentum with Domo Genesis newest mixtape, No Idols.
Following after his fellow wolf pack member Hodgy Beats’ led, Domo gains the majority of his production from The Alchemist. This collaboration of combining forces led to the 11-track mixtape No Idols released on 8/1/12.
Domo Genesis removes himself from the shock and awe tactics commonly associated with his crew, instead he aims to make to display his talents as a natural MC, which he delivers on the mixtape opener “Prophecy.”
Domo shows his lyrical talents on “Elimination Chamber” (a posse cut featuring Action Bronson, Vince Staples, and Earl Sweatshirt) as Domo’s starts “Oh so cocky, you cant stop me in this old Versace/ni*** watch me in the streets like it’s roller hockey,” displaying a confidence and wit found throughout the 33-minute project.
The common thread between Domo Genesis, Alchemist, and most of their features is the love of marijuana, a topic openly talked about as Domo personifies his relationship with Mary Jane on “Me And My B****.”
No Idols is a short mixtape but a great tape from Domo Genesis to top off the summer and his on going pursuit of stardom. Another two great cuts off the mix tape “The Feeling” and Odd Future mouthpiece Tyler, The Creator’s show stealing appearance on the project’s title track “No Idols”. The short and sweet mixtape is a great piece of evidence to display that Odd Future is more than just shock and awe, but a talented young crew.
