New Releases Tuesday

Ariel Pink, Mature Themes - Ariel Pink is, without a doubt, one of the strangest songwriters currently working. He recorded alone for years, singing into a cassette recorder in his basement, before being discovered by Animal Collective and signed to their label in 2004. His 2010 release “Before Today” was his breakthrough, with pop melodies lurking (sometimes deep) under the surface of his dazed lo-fi songs. On “Mature Themes,” he makes no attempt whatsoever to woo new fans. His songwriting style is full of nauseating twists and turns and strange nonsequiturs. Still, there is at least one track here that could appeal to the masses. “Only In My Dreams” is a melancholy pop tune, and those looking to understand Ariel Pink should start here and then see if they can stomach the rest.

Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute To Fleetwood Mac - It’s an impressive lineup that came together to pay their dues to Stevie Nicks & co. This album was put together by Randall Poster, who soundtracks everyone from Wes Anderson to Martin Scorsese, and he assembled a remarkably diverse group of artists, from Best Coast to Marianne Faithfull. Predictably, the covers themselves are just as diverse. Like just about every tribute album, there are hits and misses here. Antony does a beautifully plain take on “Landslide,” but there’s also the Kills destroying “Dreams,” a case of an artist trying too hard to make a classic their own. Either way, the original songwriting is still so breathtaking that this is worth a listen.
