The WERS Artist of the Week is Mumford & Sons! The London-based folk rock group released their first album in late 2009 and ever since then their popularity has grown and grown. The group’s profile is sure to explode even more come this Fall as they are set to release their sophomore LP, Babel.
Mumford & Sons formed back in 2007 by Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall, and Ted Dwane. All of the members of the band play guitar, drums, keys, bass, banjo, and mandolin. The band was a part of the burgeoning folk scene in London, which also included artists like Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn and Noah & The Whale. They released their first EP, Love Your Ground, in late 2008.
The band then signed to Island Records and released their debut studio album, Sigh No More, in the Fall of 2009. The record featured the song “Little Lion Man”, which turned out to be Mumford & Son’s breakout hit. The song was even nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Rock Song category (the band was also nominated for Best New Artist). Another single from the album, “The Cave”, proved to be equally successful and Sigh No More went on to be certified 2x platinum in the United States and 4x platinum in the United Kingdom.
The band is now gearing up to follow up Sigh No More with Babel, which will be out in The United States on September 25th via Glassnote Records. The group has already released the first single from the record, “I Will Wait”. If this song is any inclination of what the rest of the record will sound like then Babel certainly will be a treat for Mumford & Sons fans everywhere!
