- About WERS
Every week, WERS highlights an artist we love in our Artist of the Week series. This week we have picked Seattle-based The Head and the Heart! After their fantastic live set at WERS last week, as well as an amazing performance at the Newport Folk Festival, we can’t stop listening.
The Head and the Heart have achieved big things since forming just three years ago. The band consists of Josiah Johnson and Jonathan Russell, who share vocals, guitar, and percussion, and also Charity Rose Thielen (on violin and vocals), Chris Zasche (on bass), Kenny Hensley (on piano), and Tyler Williams (on drums). Between their tightly harmonized vocals and the addition of instruments from the cello to the glockenspiel, they create a full, genuine, joyous sound.
They met and formed through a series of open mic nights at a pub in Seattle and self-released their first album, selling it at their shows and local record stores, before being signed to Sub Pop Records. The Head and the Heart are known for their live shows and have toured with Vampire Weekend, Dr. Dog, Dave Matthews, the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Death Cab For Cutie, and many more. In 2011, Sub Pop remastered and re-released their album, adding their live favorite “Rivers and Roads.” They’ve gained a stunning amount of well-deserved recognition in three short years and we can’t wait to hear what the Head and the Heart do next!
