All A Capprofile: Mixed Company

From their very inception in 1985, Stanford University Mixed Company has made a lasting impression in the collegiate a cappella scene. Before the founder Bonnie Zare created the group, only three a cappella groups dominate the music scene at Stanford. Zare wasn’t the only one who felt there was more to the current a cappella groups. Two other students were also interested in beginning a coed group. Later, the three students joined together and began to audition singers. Who knew that those students dream would turn into Mixed Company, Stanford’s very first co-ed a cappella group?

Mixed Company has left a lasting impression in the a cappella world, considering they have been featured in compilations such as the Best of Collegiate A Cappella and Voices Only. The group prides themselves on creating unique arrangements for genres ranging from pop, rock, and Top 40 hits. Whether they are covering Coldplay’s “The Scientist” or Save Ferris’ ska rendition of “Come on Eileen”, the group has a knack for making these captivating songs stuck in your head.

The group’s most recent album release, The Rush, boasts a perfect medley of timeless pop hits and current radio favorites. The group that mixes covers of Muse and Beyonce on the same album only reinforces their coed prowess. A perfect example of the group’s strong musicality is their rendition of Muse’s “Starlight”. Not only is the male lead fitting for the solo, but also the ensemble blends together to support him. The arrangement adds a new depth to the song because of the coed ensembles talent. Their twelfth studio album is available on iTunes, alongside other current releases from the group.

I have played this group many times on All A Cappella’s Saturday show and it is not only because I find their cover of “I’ll Be” breathtaking. Here on All A Cappella, it’s about displaying the power of the human voice through collegiate and professional groups. Even though the show is based in Boston, it is great to diversify our playlist with the best from the West Coast. Stanford Mixed Company is a fantastic group that you will definitely be hearing more of on All A Cappella.
