Mixtape Mayhem: Jackin’ For Beats

It seems like nowadays that every rapper’s child thinks they have talent. Diggy Simmons, Willow Smith, and Cory Gunz have definitely stepped up to carry on a legacy. But not every baby star can deliver. And that’s the problem with OMG.

His dad, Ice Cube, is one of the most notorious gangster rappers in the game. From his time with N.W.A until today, Cube has produced hit after hit. He has been on his grind for the past twenty or so years. On his latest album, I Am West, he let his fans know that his two sons are aspiring artists, OMG and Doughboy respectively. Each dropped a verse on the track “She Couldn’t Make It On Her Own”. Although his sons dominate the majority of the song, Cube takes the forefront and slays the other two with his verse.

But this hasn’t stopped OMG from going forward with a rap career. He released his first mixtape, Jackin’ For Beats. Jackin’ only borrows the title from Ice Cube, who released a single by the same name in the mid 90’s; he is not featured in any song, which is rather unfortunate. OMG rhymes over popular songs like Drake’s “The Motto”, Waka Flocka’s “No Hands”, and Meek Mills “House Party”. None of these re-vamps do the originals glory. OMG’s rhyme’s seem limited to stating his lineage, and how much paper he stacks. It seems as though the only similarities between him and his father is the signature scowl. Not every son of a god can be Hercules.
