Musiq Soulchild, one of the many voices of Neo-soul music, killed his performance at Showcase live on Thursday July, 12th. It was in a intimate setting with low lights and a small band as expected, but fantastic none the less. The venue was packed with a diverse group of people that enjoyed his popular hits and his newer music. Blaring loudly through the outside speakers as I entered the building was his hit song “Buddy” as he performed it live on stage. The smooth soul talking singer was dressed in his typical Music Soulchild gear: jeans, sneakers, button-up shirt, a vest, and – of course – his sunglasses. The crowd went crazy as they sang the chorus along with him, “It’ll be fly if you were my B -U -D -D -Y. Don’t be shy, give it a try, I could be yours and you can be mine”. The song explains why it’s good to have a friend with benefits and why it will be beneficial for both individuals involved. The women in the crowd went crazy as he did his one two step and moved his hips and danced to the beat of the song. It felt more like a party than a concert, and all the members in the audience were dancing and putting on a show as well. It was entertaining to say the least. His backup singers made of up of a young women was doing her thing on stage and a man who did well backing Musiq’s vocals , helped keep the show live and well worth the price of the tickets. The mood quickly changed as he brought his audience into his song “Love”, couples got closer and embraced one another as they swayed their bodies’ right to left to the beat of the song.
He performed a variety of songs for the lovers in the house and the single people among the crowd, not leaving anyone out. The concert ended in a big after-party among the audience. The DJ took it back and played hit songs from the ’80s to the songs now in the new school. People broke out in different dance moves while Musiq signed autographs in the front of the venue and took pictures with his loyal fans. If you have not attended a show of his, that should be on your to do list of shows to attend. It is definitely worth it.
