All A Capprofile: Rockapella

On Friday, September 14th, Rockapella will be performing at the Berklee Performance Center. Rockapella was formed in 1986 in New York and is best known for being the in-house band for the television show Where in the World is Carmen San Diego? Singers Scott Leonard, Jeff Thacher, George Baldi III, John K. Brown, and Steven Dorian form the group, and each singer brings their own special talents to the table.

Since their inception, Rockapella has seen nearly a dozen different members. The most senior member of the group, Scott Leonard, says that with each new member the group grows closer to perfection. It is easy to see (and hear!) that the group has improved over time, and that the present members are definitely some of the best Rockapella has seen.

Rockapella performs both song covers as well as original songs. Over the 26 years that Rockapella has been together, they have released 20 albums and toured throughout the country. The group holds at least 80 concerts a year, and have occasionally stepped out of their box and performed with instrumental groups– they had the opportunity to sing with the Boston Pops Orchestra and said that it was a wonderful experience for them.

I know that I play multiple songs from Rockapella during my Sunday All A Cappella show, and that they have really made their dent on the A Cappella world. I can’t wait until they come into Boston– it will be wonderful to have the chance to finally see them live!
