Riddims Watch: Dubstep Fusion

Two music worlds come together in the new Dubstep Fusion Riddim, produced by Jon FX and mixed by DJ Lassana. This dancehall mix has a good variation of artists ranging from international stars like Gyptian to lesser known artists like Alty B. The songs on the mix have a good selection of different tempos, rythms, and beats, so you’ll find something to fit every mood.

Gyptian’s “Take Me Away” is a smooth song where the dubstep really enhances the sound, perfect for summer time relaxation. 5 Star’s “From When” and Faze’s “Party Animal” are quicker paced songs, definitely jams for the kings and queens of the dance hall to check out. Then there’s Alty B’s “Girl” and Squaddy’s “Slow Wine” which are a little bit slower, but it’s no secret from the latter’s title that they’ll get you up and dancing just as quickly as the others. If you’re looking for some serious dubstep, this is not the mix for you. The extent of the fusion is the same dubstep rhythm under each track, which almost makes the mix seem like one large track. The fusion is subtle on some of the songs, and more prominent on others. It seems strange with the varied beats and tempos that DJ Lassana would simply put the same dub track under all of them and call it a day. That’s not to say that the songs are terrible in any way, but with a name like Dubstep Fusion,  one would expect more of a mashup of the two genres.

This summer time mix is a fun attempt at a dubstep fusion, it could definitely be better, but it’s enjoyable for what it is. Be sure to listen to Rockers from 7-10PM Monday-Friday to hear this and all the newest and hottest riddims, from Kingston to Boston!
