This or That: “My First Love”

Avant feat. Keke Wyatt – “My First Love”   VS   René & Angela – “My First Love”

Both the original song and cover are fantastic. However before I was introduced to the original, I heard the cover first and loved it. For a while there I thought it was an original until I recently learned of its origin. The Rene and Angela version is fantastic and caught the world by surprise when it dropped as a single in 1983 from their album Rise. Although it was originally written for Janet Jackson who – unfortunately for her – turned it down, it became a hit for both Rene and Angela and Avant and Keke Wyatt, a version for the old school folks and the new school. I believe the original is more powerful and it deserves all the praise.
