Unlike most of her peers releasing mixtapes, Kanary Diamonds exceeds the ranks with genuine talent and natural rythym. This female rapper represents her hometown of Watts, California and her talent has been compared to the likes of Foxy Brown with a twist of Missy Elliot. Her trademark is in combining a solid flow, feminine edge, and witty lyrics.
Diamond’s style comes from her Puerto Rican and African-American background. Her songs have been featured on the soundtrack to various television shows such as Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane, Bad Girls Club, and Making the Band 4. You can also hear her songs in films like Code Name: The Cleaner, starring Lucy Liu and Cedric the Entertainer, along with Waist Deep starring Tyrese Gibson and The Game.
Her new mixtape, entitled No Gravity, was released in early June. The album carries twelve tracks, featuring artists like Sheena Player, Epik, and LX. She starts off the mixtape with a track called “No More Ms. Nice Guy”, an instant hit boasting the attitude and vocals of a confident and defiant female artist. She addresses her successes and boasts how much she has struggled and overcome. No Gravity features two tracks entitled “Haters” and “Kush” which seem like the obligatory and cliché topic every rapper feels the need to brag about. However, the slow melody on “Haters” is the perfect laidback song with a nice chorus flow from LX. “Kush” is Diamond’s ode to her favorite inspirational herb that makes a catchy song with an easy flow and background music mimicking the harp.
I recommend “Ready To Fly” as the song you may be hearing on-air soon. It has an amazing beat with smooth chorus from Epik and Diamond crooning out a love song. “Don’t Be” featuring Sheena Player almost falls into the category of ambient music with an angelic beat and Diamond singing her lyrics in whispers. The title of her mixtape is explained in the track “No Gravity” which exemplifies how motivated, driven, and unstoppable her talent is.
One reason for picking Diamonds’ mixtape is for the soothing flow, talented voice, and thought-out lyrics in every one of her songs. No Gravity will be her seventh album.
Growing up in Watts, she was inspired by Dr. Dre, Tupac, Biggie, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill, which is evident in the way she sings and raps her melody. She has already collaborated with Chingy, Colby O’Donis, Yo-Yo, Glasses Malone, Kam, Lady of Rage, and many others. Those who attend her concerts say they are jam-packed and full of high-energy dancing and daring delivery.
She has already performed at the Comedy Union, Rhythm Lounge, Magic Johnson’s Mardi Gras, and several NBA All-Star Events. One of the biggest honors for her was opening for KRS-One. There is no doubt this ambitious, focused, and extremely driven rapper will take the game by storm.
