June 23rd, 2012 was a devastating day for dance music fans all over the globe. After four years of dominating the EDM world, the DJ super group Swedish House Mafia announced that they would be splitting up after their upcoming tour.
The powerhouse trio left a message on their website saying, “We want to thank every single one of you who came on this journey. We came, we raved, we loved.” I found myself staring at the bittersweet message for a moment. I silently wept on the inside as I realized the chance of me seeing them perform live was officially at an approximate zero percent. The announcement of the break up left fans asking “Who’s going to save the world now?”
Well, all good things come to an end, right? In this case, it doesn’t have to – not completely, anyway. The masterminds behind Swedish House Mafia are all working on their own projects; just as they always did before they were group. The irresistible upbeat house music can still be heard from Axwell, Steve Angello, and Sebastian Ingrosso.
The legendary dance group will soon be no more, but that’s quite alright. This only gives us more reasons to embrace them separately. Who doesn’t want recognition as an individual anyway? As the DJs have all landed a spot in DJ Mags Top 100 list, there’s no doubt they will continue to be successful on their own.
If you’d like to experience the DJs live, keep an eye out for the future shows and festivals they’ll be attending. After this year’s Electric Zoo festival in NY, I can cross out Axwell from my list of must-see artists. I’ll be able to say I’ve watched all of Swedish House Mafia perform – just not together, per say.
In the end, Swedish House Mafia are hands down one of biggest and most influential groups in the music industry. Their legacy will live on through the music they’ve created together over the years. So no worries, SHM fans; we’re all still going to save the world tonight.
