Mixtape Mayhem: The Hood Internet

Streaming out of Chicago comes the dynamic mash-up duo The Hood Internet. Over the past few years, Aaron Brink (ABX) and Steve Reidell (STV SLV) have been mixing both mainstream and underground hip-hop with indie songs. The both of them have a very extensive musical background and had experimental rap projects during their college years. The two met while playing in a Chicago-area band and were inspired by other mash-up artists that they heard around the internet. The usual process starts with one of them will hearing a song and from there thinking of another that would sound well paired with it. Sometimes things will just present themselves in the studio. The first compilation they ever completed was done in 2007, combining Clipse mixed with the indie band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The song, “Clipse Your Hands Say Wamp Wamp”, was sent to a music blog, where it received high praise from critics. A few months later, they had their website up and running, and have since uploaded a new track about every week.

They recently released a new mixtape, The Mixtape Volume 6. The tape features work from big hip-hop names such as Wiz Khalifa, Ma$e, Kanye West, and Ace Hood. They’ve broken from their past theme of sticking to indie to indie music, and have decided to include work from electronic artists such as Dillon Francis, Dragonette, and Wolfgang Gartner to create both a mellow and upbeat feel. For an hour, the Hood Internet’s The Mixtape Volume 6 has you dancing to hip-hop going in a new and innovative direction. It’s definitely worth a listen – check it out on their SoundCloud page.
