Fun On The Playground: Harvard Square

Need some summer fun with mom and dad? There is a great local area that is good in the rain or the bright sun shine! Harvard Square, a small section of Cambridge that is located off of the red line, is a great place to walk round on a nice sunny day.

When the sun is shining as bright as you like, you and your parents will be able to shop around the square. You could visit one of my favorite bookstores, The Curious George Bookstore! This bookstore re-opened this month in Harvard Square; there you will be able to find a great variety of children’s books as well as—you guessed it—toys. There are also many comic book stores hidden in Harvard Square. If on a bright summer’s day you choose to be adventurous, I dare you to try to scope out all the comic books!

However, there are those days when you want to go out and explore new things, but the weather isn’t too bright outside. Don’t worry, Harvard Square has things to do on the gloomiest of days as well. The National History Museum is a great place to see some animals both new as well as extinct. There, you will also find many rocks, minerals, and discover many new animals. At the museum, there are many workers and volunteers to answer any questions that you may have to further your knowledge on a certain animal or topic.

However, if you just want to sit down and relax, the area has a couple theaters for you to take a load off. Not only is there an AMC movie theater, but there is The Brattle Theater, which plats many old films such as The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Muppets In Space, and many more!

Harvard Square contains many enjoyable experiences, some that may leave you with a rumble in your tummy! Within the Square alone, there are countless restaurants to choose from. One of my favorites that contains a little bit of everything is Fire and Ice. Here, you are able to choose your own meals and making sauces that will all be cooked right in front of you! It is great family fun that lets you keep going up for more without paying extra.

As we all know, there’s a lot of Playground listeners with sweet teeth. Well then, don’t forget about dessert! Harvard Square has a wide variety of ice cream options. The Square contains many places like: Ben and Jerry’s, Izzy’s, Baskin Robins, JP Licks, and more. However, if you are looking for something on the healthier side, there are a couple of frozen yogurt places such as Pinkberry and Berryline.

All in all, Harvard Square has a ton of fun options from shopping to great dining. Play on, Playgrounders, and we’ll see you next week with even more fun activities!
