Andrew Varela plays the role of Javert in Les Miserables at the Boston Opera house. A week before the interview, I had the pleasure of seeing the show. Even in the opening scene of of the show, standing silent amongst a crew of rowing prisoners, Varela’s presence is captivating. As an actor, he has some of the best stage presence I’ve encountered. During our interview, he was extremely friendly, cracking jokes and showing a genuine interest in sharing his experience with Les Mis.
Varela performed the song Stars, which he describes as Javert’s manifesto, promising by God that he will catch Jean Valjean, who he has recently learned is back at large after 19 years of imprisonment. Varela’s voice does not disappoint. It is loud, booming, and keeps your undivided attention. There is a true sense of meaning behind every word Andrew sings, and I could see in his eyes how what he was saying was a true promise, perhaps even a prayer. As someone who is familiar with the character that is generally portrayed as unlikable, Varela brings a sense of determination to Javert, which makes the audience sympathize with the character. He makes it clear that Javert truly believes in his heart of hearts that what he is doing is right by God. In the show, this makes for incredible chemistry between the characters of Valjean and Javert. Les Miserables is playing at the Opera House through April 1st.
