After declaring that he will no longer rap, rapper/musician Kid Cudi has found his way back to the music scene. With long time collaborator Dot Da Genius, the tandem debuts their self-titled album WZRD. The album, released on February 28th features Dot on drums, bass guitar, keyboards, piano and percussion while Cudi strums along and performs as lead singer. The Grammy award winning duo, celebrated for their eclectic mix of Hip Hop and Alternative Rock Music, has showcased their distinct sound again. Early in the album, Cudi seems to be offering an ode to his sobriety with his track High off. In this track he references being ‘high off of life’ having recently ended his practice of recreational drug use. Aside from being a positive track, High off has a great hook that listeners will catch themselves singing and humming even after the song has long finished
Another standout WZRD track is The Dream Time Machine. In this track, Cudi expresses his appreciation of the luxurious life, explaining that everything he experiences feels like a dream. The album’s ninth track, Efflictim is sure to impress fans with its gnarly progressions and tight lyrics. In Efflictim, Cudi recounts the lingering sensations felt after heartbreak in a relationship.
Dot Da Genius and Kid Cudi released two very different official singles from WZRD, in Teleport 2 me, Jamie and Brake. While Brake exhibits the bands musical prowess, Teleport 2 me, Jamie is more lyrically inclined in telling the story of a person’s need for instant sensual gratification from a lover.
The Cleveland duo, that is Dot and Cudi, has managed to produce another masterpiece that will be enjoyed by fans of both Hip Hop and Rock. WZRD features many tracks will surely be classics in both musical genres.
