- About WERS
Every Tuesday at 4:15pm, WERS features an artist that we feel is about to make it big in our “On The Verge” series. This week My Pet Dragon is stopping by our studios for a performance and interview! My Pet Dragon are a band hailing from Brooklyn, NY who have recently released a new album, “Mountains And Cities”, which features the single “Moonshine”.
My Pet Dragon came to fruition when lead vocalist and guitarist, Todd Michaelsen moved to Brooklyn, NY and met drummer Rajeev Maddela. THe two bonded over their love of expansive rock artists like Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, Sigur Ros and Bjork. One day the two were practicing and Michaelsen met Reena Shah, who was an actress and classical Indian dancer. A romance blossomed and the two became inspired to start My Pet Dragon. They soon self-released their debut album, “First Born”.
The release and positive-buzz surrounding “First Born” led the band to hook up with producer Stephen George, who was the drummer in Ministry. George has worked with artists as diverse as Iggy Pop, The Cars and Common. In addition to Michaelsen, Shah and Maddela, My Pet Dragon added two new members for this record – Mario Padron on bass and Vincent Mascolo on guitar.
Here’s a fun factoid about My Pet Dragon! Todd and Reena worked together on the animated film, “Sita Sings The Blues”, which Todd composed the score for and Reena voiced the title character, Sita!
My Pet Dragon will be playing a show at the Middle East Upstairs this Friday, February 24th. Don’t forget to listen in to their On The Verge session today at 4:15pm!
