Ten years ago, John D’Esposito decided to create a festival dedicated to punk rock and called it Skate and Surf. This weekend long, sports oriented concert was held in Asbury Park, NJ where bands like Folly, Coheed and Cambria, Moe, and Taking Back Sunday played. Eventually, Skate and Surf evolved into what most people know today as The Bamboozle Music Festival. For the past eight years, Bamboozle has been held in the parking lot of Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. But this year, the festival is returning to its roots at Asbury Park on the weekend of May 18th-20th.
The lineup this year is more diverse than any past year. D’Esposito wanted to mesh old fan favorites with new up-and-coming acts. So far, artists announced to play are Skrillex, Incubus, Foo Fighters, Blink-182, A$AP Rocky and Bon Jovi, just to name a few. On January 17th at midnight, the first wave of approximately 40 bands announced that they would be performing this year via their respective twitter accounts with the #MidnightMadness so fans could follow the announcements. Last night around midnight, the festival released 24 more bands that are scheduled to play and confirmed fan suspicions that Brand New will be the final headlining act on Sunday night. Check out the full lineup here.
John D. has big plans for this year’s festival. Like in years past, there will be carnival rides, local food vendors and band merchandise stands. But while artists are playing, D’Esposito wants The Rocky Horror Picture Show to be performed in the Paramount Theatre. It’ll be interesting to see how the festival will be setup because they’re not just using a parking lot anymore. Most of the festival is supposed to utilize the Convention Center, Stone Pony, and will have a stage or two on the beach. As per the usual, there is the Break Contest Battle of the Bands where bands from all over the east coast compete to perform on one of the many stages. This is the second year that Bamboozle fans can log in via facebook to earn points and win prizes on BoozleTwist. Fans can receive points by retweeting the Bamboozle, inviting their friends to join, and by reading emails. Then they can redeem these points for prizes like unlimited amusement rides, after party passes and more! Last year, I won meet-and-greet passes for the band Circa Survive, a t-shirt and a signed Taking Back Sunday poster.
